Catching up with friends

Last weekend, I took a trip back to Weybridge to catch up with dad & Jacquie and also with my friend and old boss, Rowena with her lovely 2 girls, Grace & Florence. We spent a gorgeous day at Polesden Lacey in the sunshine. The girls wore me out with several games of rounders (which I haven’t played since school and am still just as useless). Despite their insistence on lots of playing, Ro and I still managed to spend lots of time talking and catching up on the latest news.

I also spent time with my friend, Caroline, who has been to see me several times in Yorkshire, so now it was my turn to visit her in Weybridge. She was proudly showing off her new car, and who wouldn’t be impressed?

House update

....and other August stuff!

Looks like I’ve managed to find a tenant for my house. The contact from work turned a bit flakey, so I decided to put an advert in the local paper and a card in the window of the house. That generated about 15 responses! Several good ones but I managed to whittle them down to Diane with her 2 boys (15 & 16) who moves in on 28th August. I’ve met her a couple of times and she seems all excited about moving into my house (and why not!). I have been really rigorous with my checks – references from employer, bank, current landlord and personal friend, seen bank statements and ID. I also paid for a full credit check. I’ve had a deposit in advance and made sure the funds have cleared. I’ve been using advice and documentation from a great website (http://www.riky.co.uk/), so I’ve prepared application forms, check lists, tenancy agreements, inventory and more. I’ve had gas safety check & boiler service, energy performance certificate and had the chimney swept. I’ve also taken out landlords insurance and re-directed post. I feel I organised enough to start my own lettings agency….

Liddi is awaiting A level results (due on 20th August so fingers crossed). She split from boyfriend of 2 years Alec just as she was taking her exams, so that was a rather emotional time, but she seems to be happy and settled now, especially since new boyfriend Ben is on the scene. She was offered several University places, but has decided to turn them all down, and try a year out to earn some money, and do a bit of travelling first. Plans seem to be constantly changing. She hasn’t yet found a job, but is hopeful that something will come along soon. In the meantime, she is helping out at home (!!) and has started some voluntary work at our favourite shop – Scope! (which is where she met Ben). Once she has her A level results she can re-apply for Uni for next year instead.

With the bank holiday signalling the end of summer, we decided to have an adventure and so we are taking the caravan to Blackpool for 3 days. We are planning a full day at the Pleasure Beach (freebie thanks to Tesco Clubcard vouchers). I’ve decided to try as many rides as possible, but I am especially looking forward to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, and to having a thoroughly tacky, British seaside weekend (should I pack the wellies & anorak or just take the trakkie suit?).
Next thing on the agenda is me, Liddi & James moving again, and then renting out mum’s house. Phew!

In the meantime, I have just been downloading some photos from my camera, and there’s a few I was meaning to share with you!

Liddi's birthday present to James. Yum!

Our new cleaner - Consuella!

winners at the Driffield Show - lol!

Night time sunbathing? James in the dog house/drunk? No, it’s star gazing for meteors – midnight Wed 12th Aug – managed to see about 10 meteors!

Is the 'T' word offensive?

I read on the BBC news page last week that David Cameron has been reprimanded for using offensive language during a radio broadcast. Fair enough, I thought. Standards are slipping and all that. Reading on, I felt myself blushing!

In a discussion about social networking, David Cameron said, “the trouble with Twitter, the instantness of it, is that too many twits might make a twat”.

The offensive word was “twat”. Now, I wasn’t offended by that. But reading on, I was horrified to find that to many people, this is a really rude word. It appears that David Cameron (and me) was unaware of that.

Despite its potential to cause offence, the misuse of this word is a common mistake. Duncan Black, editor of the Collins English Dictionary says: “It is often used innocently as a substitute for – or perceived as a slightly racier alternative to ‘twit’ or ‘prat’, both of which are considered very mild forms of insult.” It appears that the literal meaning is a description of female anatomy, possibly akin to the word C**t !!

I was shocked as it is a word I have taken to more recently and used quite liberally!
At this point, I would like to point out that whenever I have used the ‘T’ word, I have only ever believed it to be a description of someone who is a bit of an idiot, and have not meant to cause any serious offence to anyone.

This article invited readers comments*, and it appears that it is usually the older generation that will be offended by this (not me!), and that there also appears to be somewhat of a North/South divide on this subject.

One reader commented: “it’s often considered a fairly standard, inoffensive term in the South of England (like a ‘twit’), however in the North, especially the North East, it’s considered to be much more offensive (more like the ‘c-word’).

Aaah! So although I have had an innocent Southern understanding of the word, I have been using it amongst my Northern colleagues, neighbours, friends and possibly strangers, who are all probably very offended by my use of the language. A quick straw pole in my own household from James and Lydia, did confirm my worst fears that they both knew it to be a seriously offensive word, but thought I was just being rude, and although they did admit that they did suspect I didn’t fully understand the meaning of the word, they decided not to mention it to me!!! Thanks, guys!

So apologies, apologies, apologies, to anyone I have offended with the use of this naughty word. I really didn’t know what I was saying. (However, if I used a different word which caused offence, I probably did mean to use it!)

*Interestingly, one reader pointed out that there was an episode of Fawlty Towers, where the hotel’s signpost had an anogram of the name which read ‘Flowery Twats’ ! Using the Southern meaning, I guess? – Ha Ha
